Crewe Alexandra recently lost midfielder Luke Murphy, who has been an important part of the club in the last few years. They have signed Anthony Grant as his replacement. This signing has immediately sparked suggestions that the club will be moving away from the passing style of football adopted in recent years. Manager Steve Davis was quick to dismiss the suggestions by saying that the arrival of Grant does not signify that the ideals of the club will be lost. The tough tackling midfielder has signed a new two-year contract with the club.

He is expected to partner alongside Abdul Osman in the middle of the midfield for Crewe Alexandra. Osman is yet another tough tackling midfielder, who has amassed a lot of yellow and red cards in recent years. Grant himself comes with a reputation for taking a lot of cards. He has got 76 yellow cards and five sending offs only in the last five seasons alone. Davies has said that the presence of Grant in the midfield might mean that they have to look for creativity elsewhere on the pitch. However, they will certainly not be changing their model of play.

Over the years, Crewe Alexandra fans have seen their side play beautiful and attractive football.

“We might play a bit differently – we have more power and pace and we are probably not going to get as many telling passes as we did with Luke. We might have to get the creativity via the wings or somewhere else, but we are not going to change our philosophy. We will still try to play the football we are recognised for playing. That won’t change, that’s for sure. Anthony is not going to be Luke Murphy and I don’t want him to be,” said Davis. The club’s first match of the season will be against Rotherham.
