The main sponsor of League Two side Crewe Alexandra, Mornflake, has announced that they will stick with the club despite the huge backlash that came with renegading on the Barry Bennell scandal investigations.

There are several victims and their families making serious allegations against the League Two club’s former coach. Many more including Crewe MP, Laura Smith; chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee, Damian Collins, and leader of Crewe Town council Simon Yates have all asked the club to reconsider its decision to suspend the idea of an investigation into Barry Bennell.

Despite all this, Mornflake, who has been with Crewe Alex for more than ten years now as the major club sponsor in a shirt deal say they fully intend to stick with the club. The oat and oat-based cereal company said they had not discussed the issue with Crewe Alex and feel withdrawing their sponsorship would be a move taken too far which would impact the club in many ways.

Mornflake extended their sympathies to those affected but insists on not punishing the next generation of club stars and their families. They add that supporting the club is one of their numerous local community initiatives they sponsor.

The club opines that the investigation by the Cheshire police were enough so there was no need “duplicating” the investigation that found that no one at the club knew about Bennell’s actions. Bennell was found guilty of 43 child sexual abuse cases throughout the 1980s and was sent to 30 years in prison. The club has been blasted for the way they handled one of the worse scandals in English football history.
