Jon Guthrie insists Crewe Alexandra’s players must now show the stuff they are made of as they look to resuscitate their poor run this season.

An excellent start to the current campaign is becoming a history following their run of just two victories in their last 16 matches in all competitions. The poor run has left the Alex sliding down the League Two table. They occupied the 14^th spot ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Cambridge United. Crewe remains just four points outside the play-off places but has issues that need to be addressed at both ends of the pitch. They’ve failed to score in three of their last four matches, and record only one clean sheet in eight consecutive games.

“It’s times like this you have to prove your worth,” said 24-year-old Guthrie. He admitted that it had not been a good period for the team, noting that their performance and result has been below expectations.

Steve Davis has confirmed that Crewe Alexandra are set to start talks with Danny Hollands over the player’s future.

The midfielder’s contract is set to lapse in January, and there have been rumours. The player joined Crewe Alexandra this summer on a five-month deal. He has been decent in central midfield, starting 11 games.

Crewe Alexandra would have to decide if they want to retain him for longer periods as his deal would expire on January 19. Davis said the decision would be based on the player’s performance on the pitch. The 30-year old player is already starting to adjust to life in Crewe’s midfield. He is one of the experienced hands available. He reached the League Two playoffs last year with Portsmouth. The role of the player in the team is dispensable, but Davis says he has made himself invaluable off and on the pitch during his short stay.

“We will be discussing that [his future] and with a few months to go before January, things will start to accelerate. It will all depend on how he performs, we would not keep a player that’s not performing, but he’s started to show signs of why we brought him in.

“What he brings us is a lot of things that go un-noticed, but we see a lot of his quality that others won’t, his positioning and reading of the game. Steve Davis reckons his squad is too short to go through the first half of the season, but, he can’t elongate it even though he wants to because he used everything he had in the kitty in buying a couple of attackers first up.

According to the player turned coach, signings can’t be thought of unless his kitty is filled with some cash again and it would happen only if his discards depart.

Speaking yesterday, Davis said, “If I have to be honest with you, I would say no I am not happy with the number of players we have got. We definitely don’t have as many players as we should have, but, what to do?”

“A club might be big or might have the top class facilities, but, it all comes down to cash, doesn’t it? To make the recruitments of quality Footballers, you need to be having adequate cash. Among the different attempts that Steve Davis is taking to spruce up the performance of his team, he is looking at getting some Academy graduates to join the team.

He might be willing to sacrifice quantity of players if he gets quality ones from the Academy. He is confident that the new Academy graduates at his hand are good for helping him achieve his plans for the upcoming season. He has signed up players like Harry Pickering, Owen Dale and Tom Lowery play as professionals with his club. They would be starting off as pre season players for the team.

Callum Ainley as well as Charlie Kirk was already part of the action as members of the first team. Oli Finney is another player who is set to face bigger action in the upcoming season. Davis released about seven graduates from the Academy last week. Most have signed on professional deals with the club. Davis is certain that this time he has focused on picking up players who have more potential in them rather than simply picking up quantity which will hopefully make up for any deficiency in skills. Head coach of relegated English League one outfit, Crewe Alexandra, Steve Davis has told his players they should not go on holiday this summer and should be working hard at the club instead.

Crewe Alex FC were relegated from League One and finished bottom of the table, 16 points adrift of safety, with only seven wins in the 46 league games played.

The 50-year old tactician told BBC Radio Stoke:

“I’ve told the players they shouldn’t be going on holiday.

“They should be in with the management grafting away to improve things.”

Davis, who has been given the backing to carry on at Gresty Road by the club’s board, is adamant the squad must show commitment if they are to mount a serious challenge for promotion next term.

The Coach continued.

“For a lot of them, they should be in for the majority of the time proving themselves physically and mentally in preparation for pre-season.

“Everybody at the club has to do better, including myself,” Davis added.

The Alex have released 11 players including strikers Marcus Haber, forward Lauri Dalla Valle and midfielder David Fox. A contract has been offered to defender Zoumana Bakayogo with negotiations still on-going with top scorer Brad Inman. Crewe Alexandra forward, Callum Saunders has a big burden to carry at the League One club being the son of popular figure. Assistant coach of the squad, James collins, says the striker has the talent to be successful in his chosen footballing career despite his father’s influence.

The striker who is only 20 years of age is the son of famous Ex-Liverpool, Aston Villa and Wales’s striker. Callum signed a deal with Crewe Alexandra in 2014 and has been growing gradually with the club.

“He’s a late developer.

“But he threatens the back four and gives us a threat – he’s a goal scorer,” the coach told BBC Radio recently.

The player scored in the last game against Colchester that ended 1-1. The goal was the striker’s second league goal in his second full season with the League One outfit. However, the club is already relegated this season to the League Two after a very poor run of games as the team has earned just 31 points in 43 matches.

“It’s good to see him score that type of goal – leaping into the box and scoring with the header – he was always good in the air coming through the academy,” Collins commented on Callum’s goal.
